The Living PoD

Moving from the theoretical into the practical, we are building a 3' x 6' x 6' Living PoD.  We have been given the opportunity to utilize a prime real estate location:  a loft in Atlantic Station--how cool is that--it overlooks the city on one side and Atlantic Station on the other side.  The space is huge and of course, as an Interior Design student, I was thinking about how to design that space . . . It's awesome and is definitely a piece of prime real estate.  It would be a great location for an Interior Design firm.  But getting back to the matter at hand . . . I feel like we are on Design Star.  Each of us in our designated spaces building our Living PoDs.  This is the culmination of a six phase project from Design Philosophy to Client Analysis & Justification to Parti to Construction documents.  Stay tuned for pics from the loft.

CONCLUSION

The blog has provided an opportunity to learn how to apply the elements and principles of design in 3D in the interior built environment.  Every definition, diagram, and image have built upon one another enabling me to move from the theoretical to the practical.  I definitely have a greater understanding and look forward to applying what I have learned in my life as a designer.

Movie-Sketches of Frank Gehry

We watched a documentary of famed architect, Frank Gehry.

A few insights that struck a cord with me:
  • Artists take risks
  • Make the decision to say "no" to doing things like everyone else.
  • Director, Sydney Pollack:  Need to get to a point where you stop pretending to be, i.e. architect, director, designer--and just be.
  • Process of design:
back & forth between plans & models < give & take
work on 2 or 3 scales of the same model
  • Vitra CEO on Gehry building:  "Forces unleased found a new order"
  • Bankruptcy in finances & relationships < low confidence
  • Teach clients instead of trying to seduce them into believing & understanding your work
  • Director, Sydney Pollack: "Talent is liquified trouble"
  • Find a small % of space in the commercial world where you can make a difference
  • Art as achitecture:  composition in art < composition in architecture
  • Guggenhiem Museum in Bilboa, Spain:  way to express feelings in 3D
  • Important elements & principles:  light & scale
  • Perception of process -- 2nd opportunity to do again
  • Free association into practical reality
  • How do you humanize a space especially modern spaces?  It's all in the materials
  • Surround yourself with good people
  • Accepts projects based on whether or not he likes the people
  • Most important influence on project:  THE CLIENT
  • Criticisms:  try on, look at, but don't take in
  • Form (Exterior) + Space (Interior) = Interrelated

Total Life Design

Welcome to Total Life Design!

Total Life Design is the culmination of a lot of years of hard work in different disciplines.  Finally, pursuing the right profession that captures my process-oriented nature, eye for detail, love of nature, coaching, consulting, and creativity.

COACH.  CONSULT.  DESIGN.

It's nice to gain clarity.  Hopefully, that will translate into my blog where I can provide tips and tools to help everyone I come into contact with regardless of the circumstance.
